The Australian energy industry is shocked and saddened at the sudden loss of Matt Zema, who led the successful establishment of the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), and was its inaugural Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.
Matt was a valued and important leader in the Australian energy industry. He played a pivotal role in nurturing the development of national energy markets, and his leadership was critical during periods of significant change for the National Electricity Market.
Matt was highly respected across the energy industry for his strategic insight, his deep understanding of often highly technical energy issues and his effective management of AEMO’s critical electricity and gas market functions.
Matt was also a friend and a mentor to many of us. He was a fine person who will be very sadly missed.
On behalf of the Australian Energy Council and its members I extend our sincere condolences to Matt’s family.
